Where I Am Coming From

Sarah Stewart, Seattle therapist, smiling outdoors against a brick wall.

I have spent most of my life around driven, capable people: my family, my closest friends, former classmates, coworkers, and myself included. I know the instinct to intellectualize instead of feel, the discomfort of slowing down, and the particular satisfaction of doing something well. These are not patterns I learned from a textbook. They are patterns I have lived.

That vantage point shapes how I work. I do not see ambition, drive, or perfectionism as things to get rid of. They are real strengths, ones you likely built over years, and they say something true about how you like to move through the world and what has worked for you. What I am interested in is not talking you out of them, but working with you to loosen their grip where it no longer serves you, so you can feel like yourself along the way.

Training & Experience

I earned my undergraduate degree at the University of Washington and my Master of Social Work from Columbia University, where I developed a relational, client-centered approach grounded in curiosity, collaboration, and respect for each person's unique experience. My clinical training draws on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, the Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Prolonged Grief Disorder Therapy. This gives me a range of evidence-based tools for performance, relational, and life-transition concerns clients bring into the room. Across all of my work, I bring a humanistic and trauma-informed lens, meaning the relationship between us is always central to what happens in the room.

I have supported clients through pivotal, often high-pressure moments across the lifespan. This includes working with students in a Title I New York City public high school navigating exclusion, trauma, and anxiety, as well as supporting patients and families at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center through some of the most demanding transitions life presents. More recently, I have worked as a private practice therapist within a Seattle-based group practice, offering individual and couples therapy to adults and teens navigating anxiety, relationship challenges, perfectionism, and major life transitions. These experiences continue to shape my belief that even in life's most demanding moments, there is room for connection, emotions, and growth.
